Hi hi,

The object in the middle is a mesh2 modelled in Wings3D, covered with blobs
so you almost can't see it. The ground is a height_field painted with
PaintShopPro, and both are supposed to imitate snow... I know it doesn't
really look like snow.

The light is from a gradient sky_sphere; I used Radiosity_OutdoorHQ
settings. There are no textures.

Render time was circa 5 days uninterrupted with AMD 2.4 GHz.. This is my
longest render ever and I'm not sure I understand why it took so long. I
rendered the scene in 2 passes; first the radiosity was calculated (without
the blobs actually) and it only took 1 hour. The second pass loaded the rad,
added the blobs, and activated focal_blur with 40 samples.

Message to Shay: I'd be interested in a demonstration of your mesh-snow!

Regards,
Hugo

It's really great and nice to look at.

I agree a bit with Rick's remark that it looks like foam, and IMHO this
is due to the repartition of the snow on the object, it doesn't look
like it has fallen from above, there is too much of it on vertical
surfaces and under overhanging features.

You got some interesting effects there. The object's texture seems
additive like lumps, the ground texture seems subtractive like
depressions. Keeps teasing the eye and the mind.

Very, very cool. I see here what might have been the problem with my
mesh snow. It covered too evenly. Anyway, this looks great.

Hugo, your snow looks great. Like partially sublimated snow near a
source of moist, tropical air. You know, that looks like a futuristic
object under the snow.......

Very nice,
To me it looks like recently fallen snow right after a brief
rain.

Thanks for all your pleasant replies! I completely agree with the things
you've noted. The blobs remind me of powder rather than snow. I could
probably adjust the code for a more typical snow-look, but the render-time
puts this project on hold. It's difficult to play with such heavy scenes but
I always liked snow. I'll try again sometime.

It was nice to see Harold could find a plausible explanation: "recently
fallen snow right after a brief rain". And yes, this object is kind of
futuristic. I haven't really figured out what it does. I modelled it for
fun; kind of instinctively.

Best regards,
Hugo
