I used Gilles Tran's makegrass macro to do this, but instead of just running
it once, I ran it twice.  I ran the macro once to make the "dead" grass, and
then changed the parameters and ran it again to make the green grass.

For the dead grass, I simply caused it to bend more, and made it very thin
and "spiney", as I've noticed most dead grass seems to be very thin.  It
seemed to add tons more realism by doing this.

I've thought further about adding more and more "layers".  For example there
could be a dead "mat" or "thatch" layer of grass at the very bottom, laying
mostly horizontal.

Just some ideas...

This looks very close to being a photograph! The suspension of disbelief
lasted quite a while on this one :)
I think adding the dead grass was a very smart move.. its something you see
and take for granted in real life, but I havent seen this in any other grass
render!

It seems many of us have been thinking about grass lately... :-) 

This image looks very good and I too have thought about the layer of thatch as a
base. I was thinking I could get the look of thatch by careful texturing along
the height of the prisms. Another reason I was thinking prism was that I thought
I might be able to get some weeds/broad leaf plants into the mix. 

I am guessing the two meshes collide? I have not looked at Gilles code, but I
wonder if we could modify it to avoid the collisions but still add the dead
grass?

(also doing grass, also not looked at GT's code). It might be a little tricky -
the texture is applied to the whole mesh. Also, although GT would have to verify
this, I wouldn't bet that the original code avoids collisions, even without
combining two sep. grass patches.

Hey hey hey... That's pretty convincing! It's certainly good to look at
(which is strange, coz I wouldn't have believed that looking at grass could
be interesting!) Anyway, apart from adding a few large-scale random
variations so it doesn't look so uniform in the large scale (this is only a
test after all ;-) I think it's comming along quite nicely actually.

That is the best grass i've ever seen done with pov! Add weeds, fallen
leaves and more dead grass and it could be from my garden:)

I've also made some tests with Gilles Tran's makegrass macro using multiple
layers of grass.
My goal was to make natural forest scene (long grass, weeds etc.) using
makegrass and
maketree macros.
I never finished the project because my computer ran out of memory after few
trees
(At the time i had only 32 mb of ram).

If I remember correctly both images have 3 layers of grass each layer has
different width, height and color  . First image is a part of the original
forest scene. To the second closeup I've tried to add some broad leaved
plants (with bad success as you can see) and randomly scattered leaves.
