Hi,

It's been a long while since I posted anything, but as I very recently
FINALLY got a new pc (1Ghz Athlon, 256 Meg DDR etc), I'm POV-ing again.

This piece was inspired by a BRAZIL render - maybe some of you have seen it.
If so, you'll be able to see that mine comes nowhere near the
photorealistism of that work. Mine is definitely a WIP. I don't like the
textures, nor can I even approach the contrast from dark to light of the
BRAZIL render (even though that artist mentions using post-processing, I
still feel that my render could be improved. Maybe using radiosity was a bad
idea.)

Anyway, any comments would be welcome.

All the best,

Andy Cocker

It looks VERY realistic already!
Add some oil and dirt and it's perfect.

Usually there's an additional thing between the bold and the surface
underneath. But I don't know the english name for that. You know what I
mean, I guess... this disc with a hole in it..... damn, where's my
dictionary?

Not as funny as blurb.

Oh, it's a wonderful wod! Just one of its many uses is
blurb, n.
The summary text on the back of a novel.

I refuse to think any other renderer can do better than Pov, so we must find
a solution to this! I've tried to make realistic bolts myself without much
luck.. Hmm.. First of all, could you point me to your reference picture?

As you said, more contrast would be good.. Maybe some more specular
reflection wouldn't be unrealistic because in real life, the dusty look does
not have to be *everywhere* on the bolt.. Some parts are typically quite
shiny, because they have been scratched.

And do I see a line from one end of the bolt to the other, like it's a
screw? Is that line supposed to be there? If so, make it deeper.

If you want to keep such a closeup view, I'm afraid blurred reflection will
be necessary.

Regards,
Hugo

Very nice. The modeling of the bolts is extremely realistic.

The funniest term I've found so far is *wedgie* (specifically "giving wedgies").
ROTL, I couldn't believe such a word existed for such a thing!
