Lovely! You know what it reminds me of? The patterns you see in a hot fire
burning on a flat surface. I believe this is caused by the igniting of gases
given off by objects as they burn, I could be wrong.

Assuming no post processing was done, that only leaves high ior values on an
isosurface whose texture is enough opaque at the center to obscure an ambient
object from the camera on the iso's far side. Perhaps even an ambient portion of
the sky sphere's texture. At least that's the only other thing I can think of
that might create this effect, and it would take a loooong time to render.

Two copies of the isosurface, one scaled slightly larger than the other,
with the outer one being mostly transparent, and a max_trace_level of 1.
