Here is the result of my recent experimenting
with lathe macros (cubic_spline).

One macro generates the basic 2D lathe co-ordinates
(as in my postings to this news group 23. May
and 25. May).

And then some other macros I made recalculates
these co-ordinates for further "twists" and does
all the necessary cuts, "tilts" and translations.

I believe that the re-calculated lathe co-ordinates
can also be used and for prism shapes connected
to such lathe shapes. (I have not done this yet.)

Any comments or suggestions ?

Btw: This twisted lathe has a "minor radius"
defined by this function:

2/3*cos(4*Phi) - 1/3*sin(6*Phi - pi/2)

Remarkable object. Is it made up of tens, hundreds, or thousands of
individual pieces?

It's made of 10 individual lathe pieces.

:)

Ah, okay, thanks. I was going to guess that and then figured the spline might
be consuming more.

very cool. could be used for curved hand rails, snakes going over
terain, or something like that. is it random? or do you have control?

Thank you.

No it's not random.

These are real lathe objects (in plain POV-Ray
v3.1) where each is made up by many 2D control
points (macros re-calculates these points for
each lathe segment.)

Other macros cuts the lathe objects into segments
and puts them into their positions.

I have control, but at the moment I have not
finished the "front end" macro so it's a little
bit cumbersome to gain exact control over the
overall shape.

Yess! I'd like to see the finished macro for this. It's almost like a new
primitive!

This would be really nice for roads, rails, etc. following a terrain
surface in height and slope (for example using megapov's hf_height_at
feature).

I am waiting for a public version :)

Yes. I had a feeling that you had already guessed the answer,
and that you just wanted to be sure.

I have thought about doing this with torii for a long time.
But when I discovered how I could make a macro pass
an array of 2D points to a lathe, then I just had to try
it with lathes.

And when I saw that it worked, I said the same as you:
Yess!

It will take some time to finish the macro, so I'll post the
source code for the image as it is now.

And when I think that the macro set is finished, I'll post
again.
