It seems to me that PPM file output is broken for bit depths of more
than 8 bits per channel (e.g. 16 bits). Can anyone confirm?

... atcually it seems to me that all bit depth other than 8 bits are
broken; or is it my image viewer?

I just tryed PPM from 5 to 16 bit per chanel, and only at 8 does the
result is correct. Under 8 bits I get heavy random colours banding, over
8 bits I get "random" coloured pixels all over the object and the
background turns to black if a plain colour, a sky_sphere goes psychedelic.
No problem using PNG at the same depths.

Just in case your image viewer is called IC the problem *IS* your image
viewer and, err, well let me put it this this way, there is actually no
excuse as it was one of the first reported bugs and I was even aware of
a note by one of my colleagues. It is fixed since quite a while but I
failed due some personal issues to publish the current IC version (where
BTW also your other complain about IC is fixed) but I promise to release
it a few days after Easter.

Hey, a new IC version? That's good news!
And no - the problem isn't only IC, although I did notice that bug by
now; but it's rather benign compared to how POV-Ray goofs it...
I'm currently working on a fix (or, rather, a general file output
refactoring that will include a fix). For POV-Ray that is, not for IC ;-)

What is IC? My image viewer's name don't look like that and the display
of PPM files with various depth is broken.

POV-Ray's PPM output was definitely broken; a fix is in the pipeline
already.

To be exact, it works for 8 bit images, and probably also for 16 bit images.
It does not work for anything in between...

Only for 8 bits. At 5 to 7 and 9 to 16 bits per channel, there are
serious problems.
