I am running Windows Ultimate 7, 64 bit on a dual CPU computer. I already have
PovRay 3.5 installed in a Architectural program.

Do I uninstall the old PovRay 3.5 in the Architectural program first and then
install the updated version "PovWin362-64bit.msi," or can I install the update
over top of the old one?

Which update is best for this system, the PovWin362-64bit.msi or the Beta
Pov-Ray 3.7 for Windows?

Are the Pov-Ray 3.7 for Windows 32 or 64 bits?

What is the latest version of Pov-Ray for Windows 7, 64 bit dual CPU computer?

Appreciate any help I can get. ;-)

You don't realy need to uninstall version 3.5 as version 3.7 install in
it's own directory.
If you go for version 3.6.x, it will install over the old version.

Owever, I strongly recommend that you uninstall the very old and
outdated version 3.5, BUT, your architectural programm may use some old
features from 3.5 that are deprecated, changed, or have been removed,
like the glow and athmosphere.

You should go for the version 3.7. This will take full benefit from your
multi-cores CPU. Version 3.6.x can only use a single core.

Version 3.7 comes in both 32 and 64 bits versions. Take version 3.7, 64
Bits to fully use your computer's power.

Thanks for your reply,

If I keep the 3.5 installed in the architectural program, should I install the
3.7 in the same directory or install it in a separate directory, and if I
install in a separate directory, do you think the architectural program will be
able to access the 3.7?

Thanks again for you help, really appreciated

There are some crutial differences between 3.5 and 3.7, mostly to comply
with Windows Vista and Windows 7 folders access restrictions.
With version 3.5 and 3.6 running in a pre-Vista environment, all scene
files and ini files where located in subfolders under the main POV-Ray
folder. This cause broblems as recent Windows versions silently redirect
write operation to those locations.

Your architectural programm, expecting the obsolete access right, will
place scene and associated ini files in the older locations.
Version 3.7 expect all editable files to be located in a POV-Ray folder
situated in your My Documents folder.

Your programm can successfully start POV-Ray V3.7, but will probably
fails at rendering the scene. That is, unless it allow you to sellect
where the scenes files are writen.

The fact that this architectural programm comes with version 3.5 bundled
in is a indication that it's probably some 10 years old as version 3.6
was published IICR around 2001. It may be worth checking if there is a
more recent version available.

Version 3.6 was not available until 2004. I remember because I first used
POV-Ray in 2003, and I eagerly anticipated a bug fix that appeared in 3.6.

OK, I was off by 3 years.
It makes the architectural programm about 7 to 9 years old. Still prety
old for a programm...

Not really. Not for software specifically aimed at a particular
profession unrelated to IT. It's not like those people would constantly
want the latest and the greatest - they're happy when the piece of
software they have grown familiar with keeps running.

Also note that if some piece of software incorporates a 10-year old
version of some external module, it doesn't necessarily imply that the
software hasn't been maintained since then. It may just be that the old
module version provies sufficient functionality, so it would be foolish
to change a running system.

Some external libraries used by POV-Ray 3.7 for Windows are even as old
as 15 years now.
