i forgot how to make a sphere get diff color as it goes out from the
center? how do i do it again? (without media density)

A spherical pattern ?

yes ken thats it... how? won't it just look like it's a blend of all the
colors not a gradient?

'onion' was the common pattern for concentric spheres or circles
before v3.1 (frequency or scale needed to apply to anything other than
a 1 unit radius).
You will not actually see any gradation of a color_map used on a
sphere however unless it is CSG'd with another object, ie cut in half
with a plane.

Yes, and then you will only see it if the plane has the same texture.

Objects in POV are not really solid, they are made of an infinitely thin
mathematical surface. The color of the surface depends on the color of
the pigment *at that point*(temporarily forgetting about transparency,
reflection, etc). If a spherical pattern is used on a plain sphere, you
will see a sphere with a color the same as the last color in the
color_map. If you cut it in half with a plane, and texture the cutting
plane with the same texture as the sphere, you will see a half-sphere(a
hemisphere) and the gradient from the center outward on the cut side.

...or your sphere is transparent.

...or the texture on the sphere has turbulence.
That's the way I do planets - sphere, onion, turbulence.

Cheers, PoD.

... or the texture is translated to some point from the origin or...

the texture is applied *after* the CSG, or...
