Objects in POV are not really solid, they are made of an infinitely thin
mathematical surface. The color of the surface depends on the color of
the pigment *at that point*(temporarily forgetting about transparency,
reflection, etc). If a spherical pattern is used on a plain sphere, you
will see a sphere with a color the same as the last color in the
color_map. If you cut it in half with a plane, and texture the cutting
plane with the same texture as the sphere, you will see a half-sphere(a
hemisphere) and the gradient from the center outward on the cut side.
