Well, I looked through the stills images of the horror round and I have
to say that I had expected to see a higher level of quality. A few very
good pictures showed up (I'm not saying which until the voting is over)
but I have the feeling that the quality drops from round to round.
Am I wrong?
Did anyone use the full year for her or his image?

I haven't had time to review them all yet but there are certainly some
disappointments yes.

I just opened the news reader to write an article with almost the exact
same words as yours. Well, you saved me the trouble.
I was also disappointed because there are so few images posted by the
regular users of this news server. Only two or three (including yourself).
I know, I know, I didn't participate either. Perhaps it was a too laborious
task. I didn't start early enough and didn't want to post a mediocre image
in this kind of round.

Well, I didn't think that the quality was much if any lower than usual.
I don't think many people used the full year -- I know I only started
at the normal time for a two-month round (no, I don't mean 24 hours
before the deadline!). There is one "trend" that does kind of bug me --
the increasing tendency to lean on Poser.
By the way, out of curiosity I counted up which renderers people
used, and here are the results:
Pov-Ray: 62
3DS Max: 11
Bryce: 8
Raydream: 6
Lightwave: 2
Rhino: 2
Blender: 1
BMRT: 1
Hash Animation Master: 1
Poser: 1
Simply 3D: 1
Strata Studion Pro: 1
Truespace: 1

I did--but didn't finish it. I ran into other things to do in the last two
months. Got a great marble temple and some nice bushes done, experimented
a lot with media and various different ways of making land.

The round before that was very very dull....
I wish Gilles Tran entered the irtc..but he never does...

Frankly, i doubt most people took a year to work on this round. There were
a few outstanding pix ( i'll just say that they were submitted by past
winners who are staying true to their tradition of great work!) .
But so many entries were dull and boring .. :(
I was expecting a lot of really professional work.
Anyways, i guess that's the nature of the irct..
When comparing with other 3d contests, i noticed that majority of the pix (
the ones that don;t even win those other contests) are at the same level as
the irct winners...

Actually I started working on a horror pic but it didn't turn out horrific at
all (and not that good either) so I preferred missing the competition
altogether rather than be off topic with a so-so pic. Next round perhaps, if I
have a project that fits in.

I've noticed that too. The problem is that all commercial software come with
huge libraries of predefined and professional-looking objects and textures, so
that even beginners can do in a couple of hours pictures that would require an
enormous amout of time in POV (the IRTC is not POV-only of course, but still
quite dominated by POV users). Commercial software also have built-in modelling
tools that make life easier for beginners. Of course, commercial software can
also be very frustrating after all the freedom offered by POV, but this is
another story.
Though there are occasions when it's possible to turn out a good POV pic
quickly, a really impressive POV picture usually requires a combination of
available time, previous experience and talent that few people have (just ask
Jaime Piquer Viveres or Nathan O'Brien). It's no wonder that some of the former
POV artists "retired" the day when they started having kids, or a full-time
job. I think the very nature of POV, and particularly its steep learning curve,
explains much of the situation.

I d/l'd most of the images for voting, but was so
disapointed in the level of quality that I don't think I'll
bother.
There were some stunning images in the last round, but from
what I've seen so far, I can't say I'm interested any more.

Steve, voting is in my eyes not a privilege but a must. There are
always too few voters and in my eyes voting has also become worse
in the last rounds. I would be glad if you did your voting to
improve the quality of voting too.
