Help! Cannot start POV-Ray anymore. Got Windows error message "pvengine.exe
has generated errors and will be shut down by Windows. You will have to
restart this program. Windows is creating an error log." (*)
Looks like a Windows problem, not a POV Ray one, but please can you help?
POV-Ray is v3.6.
PC is laptop under Windows 2000.
Ran fine for about 2 weeks until a few hours ago. This morning, I installed
and tested pose-ray, downloaded some 3DS models from 3dCafe.com, and ran
some scenes from oyonale.org and ignorancia.org, all of which ran ok.
I could not find the error log Windows is supposed to have written.
I have tried the following but to no avail:
-reboot the PC
-uninstall and reinstall POV-Ray in the same directory
-uninstall and reinstall POV-Ray in another directory
-download again the POV-Ray v3.6 (for 32-bit Windows) installer from
povray.org and re-install POV-Ray
Many, many thanks.

Changed or installed any software? Removed / altered any system .DLL files?
Have you checked for a viral infection?

Thanks for your advice.
Yes I have done all that.
After further investigation seems to come from my moving the .pov files that
were open last time I used POV-Ray.
The problem disappeared after I removed the related entries in the Windows
registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/POV-Ray/v3.6/POV-Edit/Open).
Guess this can be qualified as a POV-Ray bug?

Thanks a lot, I've just been annoyed by the very same problem today,
and I was unable to figure what was happening.
The strange thing is that I've moved POV-Ray source files a thousand
times before, without causing such hassle. The computer I'm using
(at work) is running Windows XP SP2, and I'm wondering if some
recent automatic update/patch isn't turning a minor problem
into a critical one...

It's Windows itself that closes POV-Ray by authority, and it says
that it happens in module cmedit.dll, so it's rather a problem
with CodeMax (and Windows, as I stated just before).
However, I think it should be fixed (if possible) on POV-Ray's side, or
it might become a support pain...
Fabien.
