Should be simple I think, unless you've tried and found a problem that I haven't
expected.
The shortcut link from my Start is %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe.
I found notepad.exe in c:windows\system32
I think you should just be able to delete this file.
Why would you want to do so?
All the best,

I though it would be simple until I actually tried to do so. Then it
turned out I should use silver and garlic, because the darn thing
never cared that I killed it - I had 10 copies in my recycle bin and
it still resurrected just milliseconds after deleting.
Renaming it results in having the renamed *and* the original files...
so there are now 15 different copies of it :)

That's what I thought, too...

I want to replace it with another text editor (in this case SciTE).

Perhaps you can just change the file extension association (i.e., the file
type of ".txt") to SciTE?
With an open explorer window (e.g., view the "My Documents" folder), select
Folder Options from the Tools menu. Then select the File Types tab. In the
list should be an Extension of TXT with a Text Document file type. It
probably shows Notepad as the program it "Opens with". Click the Change
button. You should be able to select your SciTE text editor either from the
list or by Browsing for it.
Good luck.

There are well over a hundred file and mime types associated with
Notepad, and some of them are not even subject to change - it't the
built-in text editor for system-important ASCII files.
I haven't tried the recovery console yet. If that fails, I'll mount
the hard drive on another machine and do it there. If *that* fails,
I'll burn a bootable CD with a Linux kernel supporting NTFS and give
that a shot. *That* will surely work :)

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft
\Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Winlogon]. You should see a DWORD value named
"SFCDisable" with a value of "0". Change the value to "ffffff9d", Swap
notepad.exe with your editor of choice, put reg back and reboot again.
Backup notepad.exe before you start in case it doesn't work, oh and if it
kills your PC, it aint my fault :)

Sorry, that probably won't work either. Notepad.exe is considered a system
file, and as such is covered by Windows File Protection. See
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/wfp/index.shtml for a good description. You
can get around it. Either Disable WFP
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/790
or replace notepad.exe in the cache with your text editor and modify the
registry in a few places and dance around naked sprinking chicken blood.

Forgot to mention, reboot after you have tweaked the reg before you try to
swap notepad.

I fail to see how deleting notepad.exe helps you achieving this goal.

I'll replace it with scite.exe, renaming *that* to notepad.exe. For
that purpose, I need to get rid of the original notepad.exe first, but
Windows is not ready to give it away without a fight. *grabs hammer*
