Hi Folks,
I have been experiencing long delays when launching POV for windows, it
take anywhere from 30 seconds to 90 seconds before it has "loaded" and
is ready to use.
During this time there is lots of HD activity (scratching).
The HD's are regularly defragged.
For what it's worth, I have Win 2000, 1 gigahertz, 512k ram, plenty of
disk space.
This happens with and without scenes loaded and is usually on first
launch after being closed for a while, subsequent loads are quick.
What does POV do on startup that would explain all this scratching?
Thanks

POV-Ray is deliberately trying to destroy your harddisk, isn't it obvious?
No, serious, you are just hunting ghosts. Maybe you should get a less noisy
harddisk... :-)

I'm getting exactly the same. Sometimes the 'splash' image just
hangs there for some time too...

Thorston, the noise I'm least concerned about, I'm trying to find out what
POV for windows does at startup that takes so much time before it's ready
for use.

Did you test out the OpenGL POV-Ray patch? I had the same problem even
after removing it from my system. I had to uninstall the Offical POV-Ray
and reinstall it to solve the issue.

No patches of any kind have been installed/applied for POV in my case.

Try uninstall/reinstall anyway. It only takes a few minutes.

I wonder if it's trying to access the net without succeeding (ping
timout?).
Did you allow POV-Ray to access the net when you installed it (it was
one of the questions in the installation dialog).

I don't remember now, but I doubt it's net activity that keeps the HD
scratching for so long.
I will uninstall/reinstall when I have enough nerve to run through all the
settings again for setting it up.

It does nothing that takes so long. It is something on your system. I
don't think there is anybody who can help you fix your setup without access
to it.
