I haven't kept up with the POV-Ray scene over the last couple years.
What are the best FREE 3D modeling programs currently available, to use
with POV-Ray? I am using a WindowsXP system, but I might be persuaded to
install Linux, if something really nice only exists on that platform.
The modeler doesn't have to export directly to POV-Ray scene file, but
that would be a nice bonus feature.
Thanks,
McLilith

Here's a quite up-to-date list of modelers that can be used with POV-Ray.
http://www.wikipov.org/ow.asp?ModelerPage
Of the free ones, Wings seems to be the most popular among POV-Ray users
(judging from the pictures shown in these groups).

Just today I downloaded 'JPatch'.
It's a modeller that uses splines for modelling.
I find it very intuitive to work with.
Only I find, the .inc files it produces are kind of big.
It's a Java Application and it's free.
Iff you allready have a Java runtime environment, the JPatch program itself
4 or 5 MB in size.
Source: http://jpatch.sourceforge.net/
Happy modeling,
Burki

You should check out Art Of Illusion (you need java for that), it's at
www.artofillusion.org, it can export to POV-Ray.
Have fun with it!

What about a modeller for architectural scenes?
Thanks.
