I had a seminar this is week on MAX MSP and Pure Data. I don't know if it's
weel known by the POVRay community. This is an OpenArchitecture software for
sequencing. Mainly used in Music and Performing Arts. We use MAX MSP for
programing PIC (microchip controllers) for ROBOTS.

I was wandering if someone I've heard about similar project for Geometry.
Using UML interface to rapidly program a Prototype Code for Geometry
(POVRay). The counters are exactly the sames, math ojects, objects types,
operation (COPY, TRANSLATE,...) Anjd there's sliders to control your
parametrized form.

We could compare the Paradigm of IRCAM (with MAX MSP) with the paradigme of
the MIT (with DESIGN BY NUMBERS and PROCE55ING). One is more graphic
oriented than the other.

If someone know something about UML and Geometry Construction, just tell me
if you saw similar projects. I'm working on my Master Thesis on Geometry
Models for Architecture, and maybe I'll spend some time on that subject.

Unlike audio (and even easier, MIDI), you can't get POV to compile in real
time. So how would this work? There have been some attempts to render POV
scenes using OpenGL, but none (that I know of) with the types of sliders and
knobs that Max/MSP offers.
FYI - Max/MSP (long a Mac-only app) has recently been released for Windows.

Coming from the sound synthesis world, have a look at CsoundAV, which uses
OpenGL to render sound and images in real time:

Best,
D.

I worked with CSoundAV few times. This is a really great project. Few person
here working with PovRay seems to work with CSound. I see a lot of
similarities between PovRay and Csound.

CSound is code oriented. With OpenGL interfaces, you could map your
parameters to modify a code (in OpenGL).

The goal is not to procduce sound, but to have an interface for 3D
programming, even not in real time. It's more on how you sketch (as in the
project Proce55ing.net) your algorithms. PureData and Max are clearly done
for realtime processing systems, but maybe we could use the same way to
represent objects (operators) in PovRAY.

We could imagine keeping the Spirit of UML for modeling in PovRAY. I saw few
projects based on that, but it was mainly used for post-process effects
(like photoshop filters and 3D transformations) rather than the geometry
construction.

For example, We have a set of points and we would like to apply a convex
hull operator on to obtain a polygon. We map the point list to the input of
a blackBOX "Convex Hull" and the output is a polygon that we pass through
another blackBOX "extrusion" for example. This would make the sketching
(coding) more intuitive, compromise between interactivity and plain text
coding.

Well I like very much the idea, but I only wish there were a way to make
this "procedural" interface supply some visual feedback, even if in "near
real time." If you get any further ideas, please let me know.
I agree that many people do not know of both POV and Csound - too bad, as
they have very much in common.
Good luck with your work.

What I saw of GEM (graphic engine for PureData) is working in that way. But
I didn't found any Bool operators. But as you described, you could change
parameters on the fly.

But with this question about RealTime RayTracing make me think to a great
french teacher who made a project for RealTime Java RayTracing. His Name is
Alain Marty.
http://marty.alain.free.fr/frame.html

Thanks Dennis, I'll try to keep you informed. By the way, please have a look
to GEM environment for PureDATA. I guess this is similar to CSOUNDAV.

Thanks for those links. Here's a great app for procedural textures -
slightly less than real-time but very powerful.

Hi
this statement about using MAX/MSP for programming a PIC really made me pay
attention. Does this mean you are using MAX/MSP as a programming/compiling
environment or are you communicating to a pre-programmed PIC from MAX/MSP??

Could you enlighten me a bit more about this? Please.

Rob
