I have povray for windows 3.5. The default option is to show the render
window while rendering. Somehow I managed to change that so that it doesn't
show until rendering is finished.

I would like to set it to show while rendering. I'll be darned if I can
figure out how. In fact I removed POVRAY altogether and reinstalled it, but
it still remembered the previous option setting.

Help anyone?

Menu Start -> Programs -> POV-Ray for Windows v3.5 -> Tutorial and Reference
Manual -> 1.7.4 The Render Window

Menu Start -> Programs -> POV-Ray for Windows v3.5 -> Tutorial and Reference
Manual -> 1.10.8  Options Menu

enough or you need more detailed ?

It should have been enough ... but:

In the options menu, I have 'keep above main' selected and 'autoclose'
unselected.
The POVRAY.ini file in the 'render' directory has "Display=On" in it.
In addition, in the povray for windows 'render settings' dialog box, I have
tried entering both
+d and "Display=On" in the command line options.

I still don't get a render window until rendering is complete. I have
indeed looked behind the main window to see if it was hiding there, and it
wasn't.

Could there be an ini file, hidden somewhere? If it's like most *nix
programs, this one goes through a series of ini files, from global, to user,
to local, with each superceding the previous. Maybe I'm missing something
in a hidden "user settings" directory somewhere?

Thanks,
Alan

The closest thing to a "hidden user settings directory" is the Windows
registry which is like a giant database where most programs store settings
(including Windows itself). From the run menu, type "regedit" but be
careful! You can seriously screw some things up by messing in areas you
don't know about!
