Whenever I've started a render, it's almost impossible to type in POV's editor. Every
now
and then POV-Ray decides to take a nap for a few seconds, and during that period, I
can do
almost nothing with my computer. However, when I restart POV-Ray, the problem seems
to be
solved.
I'm using POVMan 0.71.4, but I had the same problem with MegaPov 0.7.
Now, what I want to know is: did anyone have a similar problem, and is it fixed in
POV-Ray
3.5?

I have the same problem with POV-Ray 3.5 on Win NT (SP 6), with a K6 processor. I
think it happened under 3.1g as well but I don't recall clearly.

Setting the priority of pvengine.exe to Below Normal seems to help things
for me. Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get to the Processes and right-click on the
executable (megapov.exe, whatever), Set Priority there.

I never had trouble in the beta of 3.5's CodeMax Editor even if I let things
be default but external programs will freeze on occasion if I don't tone
down POV-Ray in the Processes. It really grabs all the CPU time or
something and even if I raise GUI priority via Render menu it doesn't take
much effect it seems.
I must say that even if lowering priority helps running adjacent programs I
can't say it would help the internal editor though. I just don't see any
significant change in that regard so that's not something I can comment on.
You get into a whole render-time thing there by changing all that stuff, so
setting things the way you need is going to be a bit of personal preference.

Not really been a bad problem to me, maybe partly MHz related as to what is
seen. I've a 800MHz P3 here.

I don't really understand why I'm the first one to complain about this, if I'm not the
only one having this problem?

Perhaps because nobody else has XP?

It only started with beta 10 and it's only just started to be an annoyance. at first I
thought it was just something to do with the
many processes I tend to have going at once but now it seems it's something to do with
pov.

I have had this problem for years with NT (since 3.1 at least, on several
machine) and reported it a few times but got no confirmation. Why nobody
seemed to mind until now is probably due that few people used NT, and if
this problem has spread to XP it may mean that it's eventually going to grab
someone's attention !

iirc I have confirmed this behaviour in answer to your post in some group (iirc
beta-test)

I always set povray to low priority on my NT. It helps avoid pauses in my case.

Assumptions: For 3.5 I played a lot with insert menu and found that it takes
little time to load it. I wonder if it is some kind of dynamic resources and it
is loaded and unloaded time to time. There are bitmaps - perhaps they are
unallocated when memory is required to something and allocated again when povray
gets focus or insert menu gets hit.

I have never had such a problem unless i set the priority to more than
'Lower', the only somehow related problem i can think of is the 'long
delay when saving on network drive' problem, but that's something
different i think.
