I posted this I think about a year ago, maybe on another povray list,
and got not much of a response, so I'm trying again.  
Are any of you pov-win users able to print out your code with COLOR
printing of the syntax highlighting?  I can't get it to work on mine
(don't even know where to look for checking the option)?

I suppose then that the existence of such workarounds implies that this
is not a native ability to the WinPOV GUI...
Feature suggestion?

I'm guessing you might be Mark Wilson.

I have tried to find something about color printing from the CodeMax editor
in a Google search and nothing seems to be said for certain.

I still think I had printed a couple pov files with the syntax colors intact
when using my Epson Stylus Color that had the ability to do PostScript.
There's no other way I can imagine I had done that, except for the
documentation, but that isn't the same thing and wouldn't look the same as
the monitor shows anyway. At least I sure don't remember any exact examples
placed in the older Doc.

I still think it's kind of odd that no one from the POV team has
commented on this issue definitively--
or at least a faithful user who's tracked POV-win since (its) birth! 
 
BTW, I appreciate the links someone suggested about python & perl
scripts to convert the POV code to HTML, but even that seems like more
trouble than ought to be necessary.  I mean, he||, they (the POV coders)
kept the +ud switch, and that doesn't seem to serve any MORE of a
productive purpose! ;-)

I suspect Chris Cason is more concerned with the usability of the actual
coding environment than he is about your ability to have pretty print-outs,
but I am only guessing.

I actually am /not/ trying to be capricious or superficial about this
issue. I respect and am genuinely grateful for the efforts that have
been made to provide a usable coding environment (in my heart of hearts,
I confess I prefer the WinPOV GUI to POV'ing on vim under Linux, and
wish I had the setup to do something comparable under my preferred
platform),  but I *also* like to think about and work on my project away
from the screen, and am indeed often in situations where I can't
feasibly access it.
  
Having a "pretty printout" /would/ actually be helpful; if color syntax
highlighting were pointless, no one would have bothered to code it in to
the screen env., would they?

You know that each color printout will easily cost you five times what the
black printout costs you, right?

I think you have a somewhat strange understanding of priorities here. 
This might seem an extremely useful feature for you but maybe you should
have spent a bit more time on trying ABX's suggestions.

Let me formulate it this way: There are a real lot of high quality tools
nicely printing HTML so it is a very efficient approach to have a
customizable converter for POV-SDL code to HTML and leave the printing to
a different program.  I wonder if you even tried Ingo's povsdl2html.  It
is highly customizeable with style sheets and you have a WYSIWYG preview
in the Browser - implementing such things inside the POV-Ray IDE (and this
on several platforms) would be a real lot of work the POV-Team could
better spend on other things.

Win-POV already has support for integrating 3rd party tools into the tools
menu so there won't be a problem adding an entry calling the converter and
opening the resulting file in a browser.
