Hi!
I found a great program to make POV for Windows much faster: PowerTOP
It can set the priority of processes under Windows! I made Povray3.1
about 150 percent faster by setting POV's priority to RealTime and
killing out some useless Winows-processes.
You can download this prog under www.gsma.de (don't mind the ".de", they
have an English page, too)
Have a lot of fun...

150% faster ? Excuse me for being skeptical but I don't think that
is possible. I would accept 10-15% faster which in and of itself
would be a major improvement in performance.

Hey, if it works I won't complain. Seeing that it's for Win 95 or NT might
be a problem but hopefully not.
You didn't mention there's a fractal program too.
TIA

I didn't notice before that it actually says "min" Win 95 or NT.
Problem: The installation isn't English even though there is the English web
page. Not that bad a thing except the installation fails. Says Type
mismatch (I've seen that one before someplace) and then am asked to Retry
but that fails. So I have to exit out.
Just so others here know beforehand.
Bob

From personal experience with this sort of thing, I've found:
1) For almost everyone, the boost will be much smaller -- 3% to 5%
2) Be VERY CAUTIOUS when setting programs to Real Time Priority. This gives
them higher priority than such things as the mouse, the keyboard, the disk
cache, and possibly much of the kernel.

Okay, i have an old P60 and there are running many processes that I can kill
with it. With 150% I mean that there is an acceleration of 50%, of course (think
of your math lessons). I'm sorry for this mistake!
You should set PTOP's Priority to "high" then at least the two programs, POV and
PTOP are reacting properly.

It's funny that tools that in Unix are available as system tools (and have
been as long as I know) have to be made for Windows by 3rd party volunteers.
Tools that should be standard system tools.

Have you tried to increase 'render priority' in the 'Render Menu' ?
what effect does this have to your render times ?

personally, for me it has minimal effect, although over the course of a long
render it might make slight difference..
but as I usualy only do 2 types of render (slow in the background or left to
it all night)

With the NT Taskmanager you can do exactly that.
But I doubt the 150% increase... (or even the 50% increase
as he said later...)
