Hello all.

I'm currently attempting to expand my POV abilites, so I just have a few
questions.

1) Is the windows and mac versions of POV-RAY the same?

2) How do you apply bitmapped images as textures? (POV-Help doesn't
explain it all that well)

3) How can you wrap a patch of grass algoithm to a sphere or, better
yet, a height field?

If anyone could help with these questions, that would be great.

Thank you!

In as much as they both use the same core rendering engine. The
GUI is different and the Mac platform has internal support for
compiling animations. Other than that they are about as identical
as you can get between different platforms. POV-Ray .pov scene
files should render identically on either platform.

Using the image_map pigment feature. There is a great tutorial on this
at this web page -

I suppose you could cludge it in the official version of the program
and there are probably several approaches available. For a height
field (personally) I would just use the extended features in the
program called Leveller. It has an "export points" feature that
will allow you to populate just about any area of an HF object.

The unofficial version of POV-Ray called MegaPov has a feature called
trace that will allow you to do similar things. There is an include
file using this patch feature called Vegetate.inc that was designed
with this in mind. You can download Vegetate.inc and MegaPov at
the following locations -

MegaPov -

Vegetate -

Oh and Leveller can be found at -

Two good tutorials on using Leveller for HF population can be found at -
