When I render an image I've noticed a discrepancy between the total time
displayed in the main window and the total time shown in Pov-Ray's
status bar.  What gives?

Pov-Ray need some time to display the final messages in the message window.
The timer in the status bar stops only when the text output is complete, ie
a few seconds later.

  I think that what you see in the status bar is the render time and what
you see in the message window is the total time (ie. parse time + render
time).
