This is not very nice. Upgrading seems to be a painful process if you
want the keep your settings.
  It seems that I will not upgrade to 3.1g...

  You could backup your registry before installing and then restore it after
the installation. You can use the scanreg tool that comes with windows to
handle this task for you.
