3.1 first release
3.1.r1 first release, platfrom specifc update
3.1a second release (bug fixes, etc)
3.1a.r1 second relase, platfrom specific update
3.1b third release (bug fixes, etc)

The "a" does not mean "alpha" in case you were wondering about that. Then it
would clearly say so by:

3.1.alpha.1e alpha version (revision 1, patch 5)
3.1.alpha.1f alpha version (revision 1, patch 6)

(note that alpha versions are usually not public)

3.1.beta.2 beta version (revision 2)
3.1.beta.2a beta version (revision 2, patch 1)

(note that some beta versions are public, but usually have a auto-timeout
for a specific date)
