Has anyone encountered the following problem: when a selection is cut
into the clipboard and has not been pasted yet, using ctrl-y to delete
a line clears the clipboard contents. Please tell me if it's replicable
so that I can send an official bug report.

Peter

This is a common characteristic of many word processing programs.
MS dos edit and many others use that key combination to cut a line
of text to the buffer which will indeed replace whatever was in there.
If you want to remove a line without putting it in the buffer place
the cursor at the beginning of the line, hold the shift key then
press the end button (or use the mouse to highlight the desired text),
release the keys and hit delete. If you hold the shift key while the
text is highlighted and hit the delete key it too will cut the text
into the buffer.

In conclusion this is not a bug it is a feature.

Well, shift-del is the 'cut' key in Borland interfaces (that's where
I've seen it). ctrl-y is used there two, but it does not cut a line
but deletes it. Also, the clipboard in Borland and Turbo Pascal and
C++ is not erased upon copying or cutting operation, but is like a
file in which things are pasted, so you can open it and copy from it
something you've used two hours ago. The point is, if you've seen this
ctrl-y problem in M$ Edit, it is because M$ can't even copy something
buglessly. That's my 34 lv.

Yep !

And some people like IBM compatible pc's while some like Mac's.
And some people prefer Windows while others swear by UNIX.
And some people prefer eating gourmet food while others eat dog biscuits.

So who we gotta kill before we get some consistancy around here anyway ?

Another thing..
Since I'm also pretty used to the Borland(inprise) systems, I try
ctrl+delete to delete a line. Yes, I know, let go off ctrl, but when
working, it fits out of habit.

ctrl+delete takes parts off the next line too.

Mark a line in the middle, with a line under, press ctrl+del and whoppa,
part of the line beneath was killed.

Everybody but yourself. Or, if you prefer to kill yourself, everybody
but me.

I'll take that under advisement.

Moral of the story, don't assume that the clipboard behaviour is what you
think.

After all, even dedicated MS users know that the clipboard doesn't work in
the "normal" fashion in Excel. If you copy some cells, then modify the
spreadsheet, then try to paste what you placed on the clipboard, it ain't
there anymore. This drove me nuts for weeks as I use the clipboard in this
way all the time in Lotus(which has it's own peculiarities). Copy a block,
make a bunch of changes, then if you don't like the result, paste it all
back again. It's a lot quicker than saving endless variants of your files.

Another example is the way MS have changed the drag-select operation. Try
to select the last two letters of one word, the space and the first two
letters of the next word with the mouse in IE 4 and you will see what I
mean. Do it in Notepad, it works there.

Bite the bullet, learn the new system, and learn to enjoy it because you'll
get to do it many more times in your future.

Enough of a rant from me!

Regards All
Gordon

I decided to mimic the MS Ctrl-Y behavior (Cut line) instead of the
Wordstar/Borland behavior (delete line) simply because I modeled CodeMax
after the DevStudio editor.

Ctrl+Delete in CodeMax is 'WordDeleteToEnd', not 'LineDelete'. If you have
an extended selection and press Ctrl+Delete, CodeMax will extend the
selection to the end of the word (which may be on the next line) and delete
the entire selection.

If you still think you have encountered a bug, please let me know..

Thanks,
