I upgraded from POV-Ray v3.5 to v3.6.1 and downloaded MegaPOV v1.2.1
With the priot versio of POV-Ray, Moray was working perfectly, but now
POV-Ray and MegaPOV both hang and crash whn I try to render. I can render
*.pov files in those programs without a problem, but they always crash when
Moray exports to them. I'm using te latest version of Moray (v3.5 build
9330) and there's nothing wrong with it - it even still exports *.pov files
when it tries to render. I can't even preview the textures I am creating
in Moray - I get the following error message:

An unexpected error occured while trying to make POV-Ray render the
material. (Code 3)

Any ideas? I'm completely stumped here, and really want to get these
programs working together.

The moray.win news group may be a better place to ask.

Moray v3.5 (build 9330) officially works with POV-Ray 3.5. The newer
versions of POV-Ray have come along since the last release of Moray.

I sometimes use the newer versions, including MegaPOV v1.2.1, and have not
come across this error. Could you post a small .mdl scene (zip) some ware
and I'll try to have a look. Your own webpage or maybe moray.binaries.

Actually, Stephen, I can't even get it working with the sample mld files
that Moray comes with (such as whale04.mdl and coffeecup.mdl). If I make a
standard sphere with a light and a camera it still doesn't work. I'm
trying the absolute most basic stuff to get it working and it just won't
for some reason. I wrote into Moray and got the following reply:

Hi Derek,

yes, Moray V3.5 is not compatible with POV-Ray 3.6 and later, due to seom
changes in the way that POV-Ray communicates with addins. I haven't been
able to determine how to fix this yet, so POV-Ray 3.6 is not officially
supported by Moray V3.5.
Regards,
- Lutz

This makes me wonder how you got so lucky as to get these programs to work
together. If you still want me to post an mdl file I can, but I'm not
trying to get anything special to work at the moment, just anything at all,
and even the included Moray mdl files crash the programs.

Alright well I just tried again and managed to get a sphere to render with T
Solid Colour as the texture (for some reason Moray loads this automatically
into the list of textures in every new file). I also tried a sphere, cube,
and torus all at the same time (after the programs crashed again), and got
them all to render together. Here are the catches though:
1. Even though that scene rendered, if I tried to render that same scene
without changing a single thing, just clicking the render button again, the
programs crashed.
2. If I tried using my own texture, even if just a basic solid green with
no finish or anything, crash. If fact, if I used any colour other than the
T Solid Colour...

I had to save the mdl file that rendered sucessfully in order to get it to
render, since Moray won't allow a scene to be rendered without saving, so
it's weird that the same saved file will then crash the programs when
nothing has been altered.

When you suggested posting this in the Moray forums, did you mean on this
support community? I have not come across any Moray forums elsewhere.

Thanks again,
Derek.

When Moray is first installed, the default is to load the file
MorayStart.mdl on startup as well as to use this file as the biases for any
new file. This can be changed. T_Solid_Colour is part of MorayStart.mdl

Do you have any plugins installed? (including the animation plugin that came
with Moray)
Do you start POV-Ray/Megapov first and minimize it, then start Moray?
Do you point Moray to the correct renderer? (pvengine.exe/mpengine.exe)
What operating system are you using? Computer specs?

Yes. Can be found at news.povray.org or with the web interface, search the
www.povray.org site.

I have tried opening POV-Ray or MegaPov prior to opening Moray, after
opening Moray, and have also tried allowing Moray to open those programs
automatically when it attempts to render. Unfortunately none of these
methods make a difference. I have tried pointing Moray to the renderer for
both the new version of POV-Ray and MegaPov, and neither of these methods
make a difference either. I am runing windows 98, a PIII 733, 128 RAM, ATI
All in Wonder 128 video card, and have plenty of hard drive space. The
specs are a bit dated, but still decent. I have no problem running any of
these programs, even while running other memory-hogging programs. The
problem is just getting them to work together.
Thanks a lot for the advice on where to find the Moray forums, I'll be sure
to post my problem there. For now I have resorted to using Moray with
POV-Ray v3.5 and then opening the *.pov file it creates in MegaPov to add
the things I need to add. It's a little excessive having multiple versions
open, but I've got the patience for it.
As for Moray plugins, I've pretty much got all of them. Yes, when Moray
installed (I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it as well) I selected the
option to have it add its animation plugin.

Thanks again for your help thus far Stephen.

I have a similar system.

I would strongly recomend not having any plugins installed, if your having
problems.
One way maybe to rename the plugins folder and uninstall/reinstall Moray.

Thanks a lot Stephen.
Unfortunately I require some of the plugins for the project I am currently
working on. I'll just have to have both versions of POV-Ray installed at
once and toggle between them when I need to add code involving the newer
functions. Oh well, no big inconvenience once I get used to it, right?
(^_^)
I'll remember your advice if I begin a new project for which I don't need
the plugins. Thanks again.
Derek
