Does MegaPOV take area_light into account while calculating photons?
And if it does, would I be able to read it back in POV-Ray (load_file
"some-photondata-file") after MegaPOV has stored it on disk (with save_file
"some-photondata-file")?
If this all is possible, including area_light's circular and reorient
features, I'd be very happy!

There is no difference between official POV-Ray and MegaPOV in this
concern. With both you can optionally include area light sampling in
the photon mapping.

There are currently no photon mapping related patches in MegaPOV so you
can surely use MegaPOV generated photon map files in POV-Ray. Note
however that the photon map file format is not portable in general.
