I have optimized PovRay for 3D!Now and it's 50% faster. You need an Athlon
to run it, because the optimized PovRay uses 3D!Now and 3D!NowEx.

I suppose it uses single precision floats? If yes it would be interesting
to see some critical scenes rendered with it.

Some more detailed benchmarks would be interesting too.

Daniel, you neglected to mention where people can get this
3D!Now-optimised version (keeping POVLEGAL in mind as far as you
supporting it, and all). I'm sure there are more than a few who would
like to test it for speed and stability.

I just optimized the colour calculation and didn't changed double to single
precision. I also used inline and some general optimizations e. g. replace
div. with mul.
The pictures that PovRay optimized for 3D!Now produce are the same as the
pictures PovRay produce.

I don't know everything about POVLEGAL, so you must wait a litte time. The
optimiziation is done, but not more.

I have a 700 Mhz duron, and AFAIK, it does not have the 3D!NowEx functions.
Will I get a 50 % improvement in speed as well ?

Okay. I don't have an Athlon (yet) so I can be patient, thanks <s>.

I just use one 3D!NowEx instruction, so I will make an version of PovRay
that just need 3D!Now.

You will get an illegal instruction exception, but I will make a version
that run's just with 3D!Now. Second, the 50% improvement was the minimum, I
had up to 180%.

P.S.: next week I will get a 1GHz Athlon + 512MB of RAM + 30GB of HD. I
think it will be an adequate POVray machine, won't it? ;-)

I don't have a website, but I can e-mail PovRay optimized for 3D!Now ( you
need just 3D!Now ) or the sourcefiles I have changed everyone who is
interested. I think I will make a version of PovRay optimized for SSE
(Pentium III), but first check the feadback for PovRay & 3D!Now.

I would be interested in both source and windows executable if you have.

The K6-2 and K6-3 processors also have 3DNow!.

I have tested it on my K6-2 500 but it crashed as soon as i used any
transformations (rotate/translate/scale)

An simple scene worked though and i made some short quite synthetic
benchmark containing a lot of reflection and refraction:

3D!Now compile: 9min, 2sec
povray 3.1g: 7min, 59sec
megapov 0.6a: 10min, 29sec
povCyg 3.1g: 8min, 43sec

Not a very convincing result and probably not representative fore real
scenes. I would have liked to test it on some more complex scene, but
making one without any transformations is difficult.

Can you please send me the scene file? I used the scene which was added and
had no problem, but I have an Athlon. Perhaps that's the reason.

Please no attachments in this group.

The benchmark scene is in p.t.s-f. What crashes is any scene using
transformations:

sphere { <0,0,1>, 1 }

works, but

sphere { <0,0,0>, 1 translate <0,0,1> }

crashes.

I had other results. I rendered the added (see last post) scene with
800x600, AA=0.3, Radiosity=On and Antialias=On.

3D!Now compile: 3min, 30sec
povray 3.1g: 5min, 04sec

I tried it, but I had no problems. I can use translate with no problems.

The crash I get when I try to execute your binary on the standard skyvase.pov
is an invalid opcode. This might be an Athlon vs. K6-2 thing.

Could be, i also tried skyvase.pov and it crashes for the same reason. Of
course I don't know if transformations are the only reason in this case.

I couldn't run your scene either, so i can't confirm that. Have you tried
the code i posted to p.t.s-f.? (320x240 -aa -d)

The invalid opcode is because the programm uses an instruction that the K6
doesn't know but the Athlon knows. I tried to don't use Athlon instructions,
but I had to fail to notice one.

3D!Now compile: 3min, 24sec
povray 3.1g: 2min, 42sec

I think I know why the 3D!Now version is one minut slower. I changed some
things by the color converting ( float to unsigned char ), but this was now
not ready so it would be slower then the "normal" PovRay. I wanted to speed
up the display speed, but this was not done jet. I will remove this and test
again and post the results.

*g* I found the "mistake". I forgot to set the compiler thr optimization to
max speed ( I had disabled the optimization ). Now new speed check

3D!Now compile: 2min, 14sec
povray 3.1g: 2min, 42sec
