No self-respecting POVer would purchase a Pentium 4 at this time. If anyone
here is going to buy it, it will be the next version, since purchasing one
now will leave us without a path for upgrading (unless we replace the
motherboard along with the processor).

Just got a new DELL notebook with PIII 800MHz and was already thinking about
the next desktop PC to get. Then it occurred to me... I wouldn't be until end
of this year or beginning of next, so forget about figuring which kind to get
for now. Will all be different by then.
Always an interesting question when it comes to POV-Ray performance on a
particular CPU/FPU. Will watch for benchmarks at the POV Bench (
http://www.haveland.com/index.htm?povbench/index.htm
) site for signs of the P IV; nothing yet apparently.

I have to do this everytime i upgrade anyhow, and if i am feeling
particularly unlucky, i have to replace all my ram as well (not cheep when
you refuse to work on a machine with less that 256mb!)

I am really really sorry, see of you can get a similar speed old intel cpu
second hand - should be almost givaway price if you can find one, but your
render times (and general system stability) will be vastly improved
