I finally managed to compile Povray using the Cygwin package. After
getting a new version (1.1.7) it worked without much modifications, the
previous problems with totally black picture output did not occur.

The compiled version is available at:
http://www.schunter.etc.tu-bs.de/~chris/povcyg.html

You will need to get the Cygwin package to run it, link is on the page.

I also made a megapov 0.6a version, but the makefile is just 'quick and
dirty'. If anyone has already made a unix makefile for megapov with
correct dependencies, i would be glad to get it.

I made some performance tests, it's a bit slower than the usual Windows
version in most cases, but there were also some scenes it finished
slightly faster :-)

I hope some find this useful either as a command line version or for
developing custom patches without a commercial compiler.

It would be nice if someone could tell if it runs on Windows 95/98/ME/2000
because i only tested it on NT4 here.

mpov has a unix makefile with all the dependencies. Since
the files are the same, it should work as well for megapov
0.6a

Could you supply a link?

The megapov sourcecode
(ftp://ftp.povray.org/pub/povray/Unofficial/MegaPOV/megasrc06a.zip)
does not contain a makefile.
