AKA the convoulution_matrix. What I would like to know is this: Is there a
way to use this filter to make only the bright spots glow? I have played
with it quite a bit, and it seems to me to be completely worthless for
anything other than abstract renderings. Please, help me out and prove me
wrong!!

Photoshop.

Duplicate layer screen/brighten mode. Treshold/Levels. Blur. Levels.
Faster with more control than in POV. Works with animations too.
