In the past I've had some fun playing around with POV-Ray via Moray for Windows
on a handful of different PCs. Recently, though, I acquired a Power Mac G5 that
I've installed Debian on, and as its overall horsepower is several times that of
even my previous P4 tower, I thought it would be nice to start using it for
rendering as well as just general Linux acclimation.

I got POV-Ray itself built and installed with no trouble; however, I'm having a
heck of a time finding a modeller to use with it. I've looked at a number of
ones from the "Links" section, but most of them appear to be dead or abandoned
years ago. Truevision looks promising, but the latest tarball is throwing errors
about conflicting declarations at me, and the CVS server doesn't seem to be
working...

All I really want here is a simple modeller along the lines of Moray that I can
use for hobby rendering, and that will build without a big fuss. Can anyone give
me some suggestions?

There is (or was) a plugin for Blender to export to .pov, but Blender is
a fairly complex piece of software.

Have a look at Wings3D. It's a subdivision modeler, but there is a povray
export plugin for it that seems to work pretty well last I remember.

Hmm. I've never done much with subdivision modelling beyond an abortive attempt
at Quake modding ;) I'd still like to find a simpler Moray-like program if one
is easily available, but Wings 3D is right in the Debian repository, so what the
hey, I'll give it a shot!

Yeah, I've never really found anything quite like Moray for *nix; Blender
has more primitives, and the UI has undergone some pretty drastic changes
(I've heard), so you might look at it as well, it just seems to be one of
those 'tactical nuke to kill a fly' situations.

Yeah, exactly. I _could_ pick up something like Blender, I guess, but I'd really
rather just stick with what I know and enjoy. Truevision _looks_ like exactly
what I'm looking for; guess I'll see if I can't figure out how to apply the
source patches manually...

Which *nix distribution are you using?

Might already be a package prebuilt - you could look in the open build
service (previously the opensuse build service - but it can be used to
build packages for more than opensuse, hence the rename) - http://
software.opensuse.org/search will do a search of it, just select your
Linux distribution (if you're using Linux, which it sounds like you are)
and see if it shows up.

I'm using Debian (Squeeze) PPC64. I've got the source and the required libraries
for Truevision, it's just that there's bugs in the source with references to
undefined symbols and double-defined symbols. They've been fixed, apparently,
but the fixes aren't in the last tarball, and the CVS appears to be down, as the
project is no longer in active development :/ So I guess I'll have to try
patching it myself...

Yeah, it looks like it hasn't been updated since 2005, probably dependent
on older libraries and whatnot.

You could always use the Povray SDL. It's not that difficult. Also, you can pick
up an old and cheap core2 or athlon ii computer that is much faster than the
ppc970.

Well, it can be difficult if you don't have a good visual way of
thinking. I have difficulty visualizing what I want to see on the screen
without actually seeing it.
