Perhaps of interest...
Recently upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04 and looked again at the
performance issue (github #48) on recompile to see what might have changed.
The 3.7.0 stable to current 3.7.1 --benchmark degrade in performance is
still there, but less so, and 16.04 due the compiler updates or whatever
else new ends up faster for both 3.7.0 stable and 3.7.1.
i3-4130 @ 3.40GHz × 4 Haswell

Ubuntu upgrade looking to be generally good news with respect to POV-Ray.
