Is there anything after version 3.1g in source or binary for Solaris
systems?

  Source is not yet public.
It has been decided that at this stage making and supporting a Solaris-binary
of the beta version would be too much effort, as the final version will be
published soon. After that you can compile the Solaris version yourself.

I've had trouble in the past getting the code to compile cleanly under
Solaris. Will there be either an automagic configure before make, or
clear instructions on what to change in the configure file, to get a
Solaris compile?

Yes, there is a script which configures the makefiles and which should
make the source compile without problems in Solaris.
(Even though I personally have had some problems which it, which I have
reported; eg. the makefile contains a -static compiler option for gcc, which
causes it to not to link here, as there are no static versions of the X
libraries installed here... Removing the -static helps, although then I
have to specify a libtiff.a location manually, but that's most probably just
a problem here.)
