Perhaps you are just using the wrong settings with CMPEG. It can produce
very nice (and big) mpgs too.

But once you master the syntax and the usage of the ctl files you can
control in extreme detail the format of your mpg. This will allow you to
create animation-specific mpgs which are optimal for each animation you
are trying to make.
I think that this is not possible in most mpg-encoders.
