There is a nice height_field program called Terrabrush
http://www.cyberfunks/de that does a nice job, but does not have all the
special functionalities that Geomorph seems to have (I do not run Linux). On
the not-freeware side there is Leveller of course.

You might be interested by World Machine 
(http://www.world-machine.com/), which I haven't tried for a while, but 
was already very powerful as a terrain generator when I did.
