Yes, Painter 3D was published by Metacreations circa 1998 but unlike Painter
and Poser it wasn't picked up by another company when Metacreations went
belly up :( I guess that it was much too advanced for the hobbyist market at
the time.

I'm not sure how much Corel7 costs if you still can buy it, it should be
very cheap by now. I remember it came with CorelDream, a 3d app that alowed
you to airbrush on the surfaces, I think the free download of Caligari
Truespace 3 also alowed this as well you can get it here
http://forms.caligari.com/forms/ts3all_free.html
Unfortunately but I don't know if any of these export the textures at all.

Hello, I'm new here. Funny tho I was looking for the same kind of software
and bumped into this thread. So far I only found Tattoo, and it's windows
only.
Another solution is to use Blender. Yes, that's right, Blender. Blender's
real time texturing may not be quite "direct" as tattoo, meaning you paint
directly into the mesh with brushes but it's real time anyway.
You need two separate wndow, one is UV/Image editing window for painting the
texture and the 3D window to display the current changes in real time. It's
the closest thing I can find and it's good enough for me so far.
Hope that helps.

Woops it's me again. I found a video tutorial. Texture painting directly
into the mesh can actually done in blender also.

Wings is far simpler than other softwares out there. Blender itself aren't
that confusng. The workflow seem to be irregular, but once you grab it
you'll work faster even than on commercial softwares.

Oh, I know it is, it's a great tool. I think the problem with Wings uv
mapping is that there are 'so' many ways to do it, and after reading several
different tuts on how to do it, people seem to have their own preferences. I
guess the best way to learn it is to grab a sphere and try *everything*.

I can quite believe that, but I think I'll just try and master Wings
for now. :o)
Also, I think Wings will be greatly improved over the next couple of
years. (Hope so, anyway).
Thanks for that link btw, it was certainly 'enlightening'.

If you had problems with Wings UV editing (never got there myself so not
sure how difficult it is), you should try blender UV facility. LSCM is
almost like 3DSMax's pelt mapping, it even out before Max implement pelt
mapping in 8. I have max at my disposal here in my office, but I prefer to
unwrap in Blender.
Blender + POVAnim + POVRay would make a killer combination. Just my 2 cents
btw.

I am not sure, but I think that the next version of Silo (version 2.0), will
have more extended capabilities towards mesh painting.
