I've found a faster way to render unbounded proximity patterns, and it
doesn't use averaged patterns (not /precisely/ anyway); it uses nested
pigment_maps. There is only a slight decrease in quality over other
methods, and it still allows super-fine details to be brought out. Like
other fine proximity patterns, curved surfaces don't fare as well as
flat ones. The benefits outweigh the alternatives, IMHO.
