Hi.

Does anyone knows about any file conversion tools capable of exporting POV
scene files to the file formations of other render engines?

Thanks,

Sven

Warp,

thanks for the link. But, despite of my request, I knew already all this.
There is one POV-to-other file converter, but that one is pretty outdated. I
am talking about "Crossroads". Time for a new one, who can handle the latest
scene syntax.

Maybe, it should be the POV-Ray team which then should offer a conversion to
at least one other, common 3D file format. I agree with the posting text of
the link, you provided: a conversion requires full render engine
understanding (compilation), so that is why I think, the POV-Ray team should
add such a useful and long-expected feature. it is required, by many. And
since they have the full access and understanding to the syntax
interpretion, the task is on their side.

I HEREWITH REQUEST THAT FEATURE.

Nevertheless, if anyone still knows some conversion tool (POV to others), it
would be just great!

Sven

Hello,

That is something that I would appreciate as well.
I've been thinking about this for a while, and have a number of ideas for
this.

If one were to attempt this, they should start very simple.
My thoughts sofar on this are that the best bet would be to either:
1) Create an application which reads a pov file to some degree, and then
would translate as much of it as possible to another sdl/script format,
2) Write a binary file with similar intent in the most simple object only
file format possible, and convert further using mainstream apps.

Individual objects should be the first goal, as full scenes would be
impractical at first and perhaps at all period.

Either option would obviously have many limitations, such as textures,
media, etc.. which for the sake of sanity one might be wise to ignore.
I suppose it would be possible to write a conversion program which could,
with some (probably great) degree of user intervention, approximate at best
such features.

To at least some degree I will mess with this concept, but not for a while
at least.
(backed up with projects for local salvation army, ultra power sports,
ultimate automotive)

No promises of when or to what level I will persue this, but I will play
around with it at least enough to see if it could be worth it, but only once
I clear my board and get much more familiar with the specifics of pov-sdl.

Lightwave (because I feel like it) will be my first target, and nothing more
complicated than simple primitives at first.

You can request it, but that doesn't make it any easier to tesselate
surfaces, translate texture definitions to the target format, etc.
