Heres a thought, rather than trying to use media, perhaps you could use a 
mesh.  Spin a whole bunch of tiny disconnected  triangles into a mesh to act 
as dust particles, then repeat the mesh across the scene.  That would mean 
your modelling the actual particles rather than trying to emulate them with 
media.  Worth a try perhaps?
