Apparently, .MAX is a closed format and I would need to install or find someone
with 3DStudioMax to convert it for me. Might be more trouble than it's worth.

I imagine that there is probably someone in the POVRay community who 
might just have access to the tool. :)

(Though I don't)

I did read that it's a closed format, but it seems there may be some 
options for importing into Blender (for example).  Couldn't hurt to look.

I can convert it for you but it will have to be after work.
There are some issues with what objects have been selected for export.
