Added a term: Sketchup, and may have the answer.

Blender has a GUI and a low price tag for the full version. POV-Ray
lacks the former, and Maya lacks the latter.
It also has a steep learning curve, but that's hardly unique to Blender.

John

a GPL license, a benevolent dictator and cool demos that work well as short
movies by themselves?

"Movies," in all honesty, was part of my original agenda, one hypothesis I had
before heading to the data mines. A simpler hypothesis arose when I considered
Sketchup-- its coming on the scene may have taken away eyeballs from some of the
other programs. Free, possibly more fun for "play", and the massive publicity
possible by a major IT player, who happens to be "non-evil".

Wow, basically all 3D software (with two exceptions) is significantly trending
downwards. Could that be due to "Pirates of the Caribbean" ? In that it
presents a computer as a way to lose your soul artistically? 8D

Blender and I don't get on. Maya is nice but expensive and neither of them are
as much fun or as flexible as povray, not even close! :)

lol! I guess it's even more WTFish if one thinks of PoC as not that bad a film,
and the CGI as integral part of the film. I was wondering if somehow something
could have taken the fun out of CG for a lot of folks, such that interest
worldwide in CG software would be declining as those google stats seem to
suggest.

did you try with ZBrush, 3D Coat, VRay, Maxwell and other more modern CG
software? Perhaps Maya and Mental Ray just don't cut it anymore...
