Okay, it would be fun to get to the bottom of the mystery, but aren't almost all
of those in effect plug-ins, or something other than a major rendering engine?

nope, ZBrush and 3D Coat are the premiere modelling programs for highly detailed
meshes these days and VRay and Maxwell are the premiere modern rendering
engines.
