Hi, if I had any invites, I'd be sure to save a good portion for povray
enthusiasts, because it's like the only practical application I can think of for
it right now. Want to have a thread where folks may beg for invites?
I've got it. My userid in google wave space is the same as that listed here as
an email address for me.

Google Wave is some kind of "collaboration" tool. It allows people to
collaborate on things through the sharing of documents. It may be lame or the
next thing, but the only group of people I could imagine wanting to share such
things is povray enthusiasts. I don't know what I'd want to share with people
at my church, in contrast.
The rollout of Google Wave is being handled similar to that of gmail. I myself
got an account, but I don't have any invites to give. Perhaps people could use
this thread as a place to share or request invites in this community.
If anyone is already on GW, my account is @googlewave, but has the same userid
as that yahoo account listed as login here for me.

I am not. From what I have seen of it, it does not add much new
functionality over existing applications. It might make some things
easier to do but that won't make it a killer app. If it can replace
(non-pov) nntp-newsgroups when these are killed by spam that may be
something.
Anyway, with my current schedule I don't see much opportunity to
collaborate on anything :(
But it is another reason to think about the future of computing, only..
no time for that either :(

For two or three to make a concerted effort towards a SIGGRAPH Short, probably
not.
But for a "stone soup" kind of thing, where you add another reflective sphere to
these losers' group project, it could kill time, break writer's block, or in a
few ppm of cases, make something really cool.

If they can deliver everything they showed in their promotional video,
then I actually do see it as replacing email.
The point isn't to bring something new. It's to integrate all these
things under one service, without any incompatibilities.

I don't see it being a replacement for these newsgroups, though. I
suppose you _could_ replace them and still get all the functionality.
Well, let's say it's a toss up.

Except for having very browser-specific shit done. Wave doesn't work
with my Seamonkey, even though it should work with Firefox (which is
pretty much the same).

With Wave you choose recipients, like with email. With NNTP you choose
just a "forum" and it's free for practically anyone to read if (s)he
chooses to do so. There is a major difference.

I think I heard somewhere in the video that some things require
extensions to the http protocol and that they have a proposal for that
in place.

It is that everybody is able to write anonymously that implies SPAM and
that has already killed a few newsgroups. Because nobody wants to say
something that they feel is important just to have it drowned in SPAM.
This technology could function sort of like a newsgroup, but with known
contributors. Finding that balance between open for everybody even under
an assumed name and being resistant to SPAM will be difficult. I admit.
But let's see how they will handle that.

That's merely an implementation issue. Their goal is for it even to
work on console systems (of course, many features just wouldn't work then).
I haven't used it. Hence my saying that _if_ they can deliver what they
promised...

I'm not sure there's a major difference. Put the Wave info on a web
site (e.g. the POV-Ray web site). Anyone who wants to join simply joins
it (like a mailing list). The info is all archived on the server. I
don't know if it can handle moderation, though.

The only POV users who are actually collaborating on anything seem to be
the developers. They probably already have a preferred means of
communicating with each other.
