Hmmm... this is strange...

I've been searching the internet for an explanation of why warm fresh bread
causes stomach ache, only to find out that it doesn't, and that it's all a
myth...

.... well, I wish someone would tell that to *my* stomach...

My typical standard helping of bread is three slices, sometimes four when I'm
particularly hungry. No problem there. But when the bread is fresh and warm
(and most particularly yummy), everything beyond two slices *does* give me some
deal of stomach ache, no matter how starved I am.

Some people are intolerant to wheat, and maybe with fresh bread the effect
is worsened somehow?

The power of suggestion? ;)

Here in Brazil there is a myth that eating a mango and drinking milk is
a poisonous combination. Certainly weird, but poisonous? :P

I don't know about you, but I once ate half a pound of fondant icing. No
particular reason why that should be a problem, but... urgh! Man I was
ill after that! ;-)

Hm... why should I suggest that to myself? AFAIR "Fresh baked bread is bad" was
never a call in my childhood (different thing with fresh dough, and fresh baked
cake IIRC), and I never bothered about such issues until I recently found a
source for *very* delicious *very* fresh bread (I don't know how they do it,
but *always* when I come to buy that bread it seems to be fresh from the oven,
regardless of time of day).

There are certainly some traditions about not-so-good food combinations that
have a bit of truth in them. For example, fresh fruit and lots of water can
cause stomach ache because the fruit may (well, actually always *will*) carry
germs, which are normally killed by the acidic environment in the stomach, but
may survive if the acid is diluted too much.

Mango and milk may be a similar combo: Dairy products, as far as I know, are
even better at reducing the "acid level" in the stomach. (Ever had reflux after
having drunken lots of milk, or eaten lots of cheese? No heartburn involved at
all.)

Of course, "poisonous" is probably somewhat far-fetched...

Oh, you came up saying it's a myth so I assumed you grew up aware of
such myth.

Well, never stopped me enjoying watermellons... :D

This is funny indeed: some say milk is acid! O_o I remember learning
it was alkhaline or something. BTW, it's because of that that it
supposedly causes reflux (I never experienced, but my daughter had it as
a baby).

Hum... Wikipedia states that "Cow's milk has a pH ranging from 6.4 to 6.8,
making it slightly acidic"... comes to me as a surprise, too.

I guess most everyone had "the burps" as a baby ;) But maybe we're talking about
different things here.
