The third-person game types which I have liked most are:
1) The Tomb Raider series: Puzzles, wall-climbing, acrobatics, some
shooting (but not too much).
2) The Desperados series: Tactical puzzle-solving, but without fully going
to the RTS category (which I find a bit boring). Gunfights are more of
a puzzle-solving element than a real fighting element.
3) jRPGs: Tales of Eternia and Final Fantasy 8 are prominent examples.

Btw, would, for example, the God of War series be considered "hack and
slash" games? (I own Chains of Olympus and have played it through.)

I think what keeps them interesting for me is the story line. Sure,
playing the whole thing thru on God mode makes it much less interesting,
but if it's too hard[1], I don't feel I miss anything by God-ing over
some areas.
[1] Or if the boss monsters irrationally become invulnerable at some
point without external indication in order to progress the story. Yes,
I'm looking at you, Half-life.

Yes, I liked also to play Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege II (I remember
especially the ghost quests)...
I've never finished Sacred. I bought "underworld", but I've never played it,
because my "team" suddenly stopped playing and I don't like to play these games
on my own (not, that it would be too frightening for me ^^ ).
I'm always a support character. But it's better to play with me than playing
with "bots", I'm too unsuspectedly chaotic, that makes all games very funny. ^^

Me too. :-)
Neverwinter Nights, The Elder Scrolls series, Legacy of Kain series, of course
Final Fantasy series...
C&C, WC3 and which one again is that with some "Eldar", who can hide their
bases?

Have you also tried one of the Legacy of Kain series?
These were also great games. It's a pity, that they finished the series.

Aren't FPS more interesting, when played online pvp?
I haven't played a lot, so I can't judge that.
(Thinking of UT, I was too often the one, walking there and got shot.) :-)

Nope. I'll consider them the next time I'm at the online store...

If you like a good mix of puzzles, 3rd person "hacking" ^^ and good storyline,
you won't regret it. (Especially the parts (Soulreaver I/II) with Raziel have
many puzzles, on the other hand, you get more information of the whole story,
when the game is focussing on Kain (Bloodomen I/II), IMO.)

But only, because they are not real people, as far as I've understood the whole
movie.
Somehow it's a strange tale about Mark Twain...
but the paradise scenes are also funny. ^^
