Le_Forgeron's explanation is interesting and helpful.
You're rant is not.

As rants go, that was pretty mild. Still, not as nice as clipka usually is.
I have, in the past, seen similar behavior where "certain programs"
behave oddly super slow, after "certain events". I never figured out
which resources were being chewed up. I would have assumed memory, but
Task Manager always said I was good.

I have a tendency to not be nice when people label some behaviour as a
POV-Ray bug when evidently it is not.

`povray.bugreports` is not there to get interesting or helpful replies.
It is a channel intended for users to officially report newly-discovered
verified(*) POV-Ray bugs, and maybe track progress on them. Where
appropriate, official recommendations for workarounds may also be given,
but generally no response should be expected.
(*within reason of course; no bug is truly verified until it is fully
diagnosed; and no bug is truly diagnosed until it has been fixed
successfully)
As for my "rant", I'm pretty sure you will find that it lacks the
long-windedness to constitute one. If you want a rant, here's one:
`povray.bugreports` is not a place for discussing whether some
unexpected behaviour constitutes a POV-Ray bug or not.
`povray.bugreports` is not a place for discussing what the root cause of
some unexpected behaviour may be.
`povray.bugreports` is not a place for discussing how to work around
some unexpected behaviour.
`povray.bugreports` is not a place for discussing what the root cause of
some unexpected behaviour may be.
`povray.bugreports` is not a place for discussing anything at all.
If you think there's any need for any discussion, `povray.bugreports` is
not the place to post.
`povray.bugreports` is also not a place for reporting unexpected
behaviour in POV-Ray caused by bugs in other software.
`povray.bugreports` is a place for reporting newly-discovered genuine
POV-Ray bugs (and for developers to respond to those reports as they
deem appropriate).
There. THAT was a rant.

I don't know...
I thought a proper rant required some personal insults.
