I am sorry to say that John passed away in his sleep last Thursday
morning. The Kat and the Feegle were at his bedside.
He will be missed by those who knew him.
He asked me to thank everyone who sent their best wishes.
So raise a glass or two in his memory.
Slàinte mhath Dr John

I'm sorry to hear it.
That's a sad thing to find out, indeed.
You have my condolences for losing a friend.

A heeltap! a heeltap! I never could bear it!
So fill me a bumper, a bumper of claret!
Let the bottle pass freely, don't shirk it nor spare it,
For a heeltap! a heeltap! I never could bear it!
No skylight! no twilight! while Bacchus rules o'er us:
No thinking! no shrinking! all drinking in chorus:
Let us moisten our clay, since 'tis thirsty and porous:
No thinking! no shrinking! all drinking in chorus!

Very sorry to hear that Stephen, I was worried that at some point this
post appear. The long threads you two had together on here never really
did make much sense to me, but you both seemed to be enjoying yourselves
:-) Nice that you were there at his side.

But really It was John and Jim Henderson that played it. I only got
dragged in because I have a rule book and live in Uxbridge, home of the

Oh, you were a full participant and you know it. ;) You didn't spend
*that* much time in huff.
We might need a game in memoriam sometime early next year.

True. Though we did have a few occasional players who dropped in on the
game, too. But to work well, you really need a minimum of 3, and
preferably 4.

Correct. My human AI powers deduced that to play you simply name a tube
station and insert some rambling about why you chose that station. But I
also deduced it's futile to ask about any rules...

The rules are well-known and easily available. Don't pretend you're
unable to get hold of a copy.
Also, enquiring about the rules during a game may get you into huff,
under the Blum-Micail and Park-Miller variants.

Well, true - as long as the chair doesn't fall asleep. Then again, we've
never played with an actual referee up here...

LOL
I have to admit, last night's game made me think of Dr. John. :(
But Jack was on-point. I think he's finally reached Humph's level of
chairing, too - his comment about the bagpipes was spot on.

"apparent" being the key word there. ;)
In order to be the first to announce it, you have to follow the rules,
many of which appear to be open to interpretation.

Do the rules reset at the beginning of each game, or are they carried over?

No.
You have to start first and that involves declaring which rule set and
variations you are using.

Depends.
If you are using the 1859 Cambridge (Christ's College variations) in
conjunction with lots of Fellowships. The rules may and do evolve. ;)

Well that's sad to hear. Thanks for letting us know, and I'll pour a
