A good open world game has good story/plot as well. I have played IWar 2
and Fallout: New Vegas and they were both great. Grand Theft Auto and
The Witcher 3 are also supposedly great games, though I haven't played them.

As I understand it Star citizen has many components. It has a single
player FPS campaign, multiplayer FPS shooter and MMO. In the MMO you can
choose from different "jobs" in a totally open universe. You can trade,
be a marine or a pirate. They have modified Cry-Engine into their own
"Star-Engine" with realistic sun-lighting and a totally persistent
universe. Cargo is not just a icon on a screen. You can go into the
cargo bay and physically carry out whatever is in the cargo bay. In the
cities, you get npc's with jobs, etc much like Skyrim. Mark Hamil is
also in there fully mocapped. Their goals for everything they do is to
be just as good or better than the best in gaming. Obviously the story
for the fps is unknown, so that remains to be seen, but that is still in
pre-alpha. Backers get to have a space craft and test the game where it
currently stands.
