... so, it's time to let you let you all what's happening to me.
In September last year I was diagnosed as having Mantle Cell Lymphoma.
It's relatively rare and thus difficult to treat. It's also diagnosed
late, mainly because it shows few, if any, symptoms in its early stages;
by the time I was diagnosed I was at stage 4b. This was not good.
Luckily, I was assigned a brilliant consultant, David Wrench (a Scot,
but don't hold that against him), who fought to have me included in a
new trial protocol that has a fighting chance of preventing me from
joining the Choir Invisible for a few years yet. I get a PET scan in
about 10 days time to confirm our suspicions that I may be heading for
remission. If that is actually the case then I get a Stem Cell
Transplant in the late Summer.
I tell you this so that you don't all wonder why I might have
disappeared from the ng in a few month's time.
Oh, nearly forgot: What's the Subject line about? I'm just a foot
soldier who volunteered to be part of the Forlorn Hope. If it all works
we'll be one step closer to ridding the world of cancer.

It's just occurred to me that some may not know what the Forlorn Hope
is. I quote Wikipedia:
"A forlorn hope is a band of soldiers or other combatants chosen to take
the leading part in a military operation, such as an assault on a
defended position, where the risk of casualties is high."

Good luck John! I sincerely hope remission is confirmed. It would
certainly not be for a lack of fighting spirit indeed from your side.

I did not know that. I thought it was the "nom de plume" or "nom de
guerre", even, of a developer. ;)
Anyway, I'm glad you have come out of the closest.
Slainte mhath!
Which reminds me...

I am both sorry to hear that this has happened to you, and very happy to hear
that there is cause to think that your're entering remission!
In recent years, I've known more than a few people who have been diagnosed with
or have left us due to one -oma or another.
I hope you have many good people around you to help carry you through and keep
your spirits up.
I wish you the very best of science and luck :)

Now, how did I know that you'd say that?
BTW The subject line is a straight lift from:

Thanks, Thomas. As David Wrench said, we can do this the easy way (and
you'll have a few years) or we take the hard option. I, naturally, chose
the hard route.

Thanks for the good wishes. Rest assured that I have a very strong
support network; one of them is a regular poster on this very newsgroup.

You are only saying that because I've not given you the bottle of hooch
I said I would when you can drink again. {I have been holding off in
case I did not have to buy it. {Did I say that out loud?)}
And thanks. :-D
