Pro Tip:

Keeping your desk covered with obsolete paperwork can be an effective
first line of defense against beverage spills.

(A thorough mix of obsolete and important paperwork -- not so much.)

Confirmed by experiment.

Also, the "sticky keys" keyoard setting has no effect on coke stains.

I coughed and spit some water on my monitor once. There's still a dark
splotch near the bottom where the pixels are dead.

I heard that - although never tried - most keyboards can go in the
dishwasher (without soap), upside down on the top rack. You just have
to make sure they dry completely before reconnecting them.

Never put a keyboard in a dishwasher, it gets too hot and will most likely
deform the keyboard.
What I use is hand warm water in a tub, gentle dish soap and a soft brush. It
will get the keyboard clean and shiny again. You just have to rinse it
thoroughly to get the soap out. After that just let it dry. For that I put it
on a fan.

It's easier to just throw the keyboard away at the end of the day, and use a new
one daily. I have 1,732 new keyboards sitting in my closet, awaiting use...

Of course, if you're environmentally-minded, you can recycle 'em as art. I glue
the old ones together, to make a big impressive-looking ball. It's now 17 meters

Not really an option in this case -- we're talking about a Logitech G19
here. They're not even making them anymore.

The fan is more than a good idea.
When I used to work for a living. It was essential to blow the water
off. Otherwise you get mineral deposits and that can cause tracking or
changes in capacitance.
Now here is something you might find hard to believe because I did.
Coffee with milk is good for cleaning the outside of equipment such as
the beige system boxes of old.

I purposefully got my keyboards second hand. I like them because they
are nice and solid. Not the cheap flimsy things you get when you buy a
PC at the local box store.

I had found that one already. Did you have a look at the price for a new
one? EUR 421,68, that's about 320 GBP at the current exchange rate.

> or
> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-920-000978-G19-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B001RORKH4

Not an option, as it sure as hell isn't a German one.

But I'm mildly optimistic about the specimen I gave a few sips of coke
to drink. I've gone for the disassemble-cleanse-reassemble approach now.

First of all, a bit to my surprise, the G19 doesn't use fancy individual
switches that the phosphoric acid- and sugar-rich liquid might have
seeped into to avoid detection. Instead, it uses a multi-layered
sandwich structure, at the core of which is a membrane keyboard -- a
transparent one, presumably to facilitate illumination of the key caps,
so that I can say with absolute certainty: No coke has made its way to
the actual key contacts.

Above that sits a shaped mat of thin rubber effect the desired key
travel and pressure point, and atop of that the top cover assembly with
the keycaps mounted safely in a rack, which greatly simplifies
maintenance of this portion of the keyboard. All these components got
their fair share of beverage, and some keys had already become sticky
not only to the touch but also in terms of movement, but they've all
gotten a thorough rinse with soap and warm water and should be perfectly
fine now. (The keycap assembly has also received a thorough shower on
this occasion.)

Below the membrane keyboard is a piece of transparent plastic, obviously
serving as a light guide, and below that a highly reflective white sheet
of whatever; Some coke had managed to creep between these two, but they
also received a good rinse, as did the bottom cover.

The display that sits at the back of the keyboard should also be fine,
as it hasn't received any coke in places where it could have seeped inside.

So the only thing that still worries me is the keyboard electronics. I'm
not sure whether I want to drown that in water just to be sure, or just
be content with having wiped it with a wet cloth and then wiped it dry
again.

Oh, and then of course there's the other thing to be worried about:
Whether I'll be able to reassemble it properly ;)

I can understand that. They don't feel right typing on them.
My last k/board was an inexpensive gaming one, a Corsair k30 keyboard.
About 40 GBP.
It feels solid and sturdy with a positive key action, well worth the
money and that is not counting the illuminated keys and extra keys for
macros.

No I did not. You could buy two cheap laptops at PC World for that
price. (If you had taken leave of your senses.)
I thought the price of the German one was pricy so that's why I posted
the UK one without thinking.

I would have rinsed it off and maybe rinsed of the water with alcohol
before drying. That is an option for later if it does not work.

I'm terrible with membranes and the like. And I’ve never successfully
put back together anything that used an elastomeric connector.

No banana, unfortunately. The U, I and Caps Lock keys remain dead, and
seem unwilling to be revived.

Which means that for now I'm stuck with a spare keyboard I originally
bought for the occasional direct access to my otherwise headless Linux
box, chosen specifically for its tiny dimensions and affordable price.
/Not/ the thing that's fun to use for software development.

I hate to be begging, but as I'm currently short on money (and high on
round tuits since a couple of days now, which is a bad sign as far as
finances go), while at the same time I don't see a point in replacing
one crappy keyboard with another marginally less crappy one, I'd like
everyone to know that donations would be highly welcome at this point.

I guess my current dream keyboard would be one of these:

http://www.amazon.de/registry/wishlist/VJ0OCNX5ZOGH

Having gotten quite used to the 12 programmable macro keys on the G19, I
must confess I'm hesitant to get anything with fewer of those.

The internal organs of this gadget sound somewhat similar to those of

As I recall, the trick with the MS Whozit was to lift out the sheet with

I did manage to resurrect a couple of them multiple times with this

There are a few problems with applying this remedy to my G19:

- The G19's printed circuits sheet isn't a single sheet, but again a
sandwich of three sheets: A single-sided upper contact layer, a spacer,
and another apparently double-sided layer. These layers are heat-welded
together at strategic points, making it difficult to get a good glimpse
of the contacts from an angle, let alone access them specifically.

- I don't have any alcohol at home - not even a beer ;)

- There is plenty of evidence that the brown ooze never ever reached the
U and I key contacts, and instead wreaked havoc somewhere else to kill
an entire row of the key matrix (the G19 has 5-key rollover, so it is
reasonable to assume that the rows and columns of the matrix are only
sparsely populated).

Yeah, that thought had already crossed my mind, too ;)

Ah. I recall the three plastic sheets in the MS keyboard as being
separate, but I don't recall if they were that way originally or if they
required encouragement.

> - I don't have any alcohol at home - not even a beer ;)

My husband was an insulin-dependent diabetic, so consequently we kept a
supply of the little alcohol wipes for his injections and finger-sticks.
It turns out that they're extremely useful for cleaning contacts,
displays, and so forth--anything that you really don't want to hose down
with the Scrubbing Bubbles.

I have about three quartes a litre of IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) for
cleaning things. I got fed up with using vodka. :-)

Is *that* why it's called "Greenking IPA"?

Naw, there is only one real IPA and it is called McEwan's. :-P

A sad waste of vodka (although personally I'd prefer rum to not
waste--preferably in conjunction with fruit juice and neon-colored
liqueurs, with a little paper umbrella on top to keep the rain out.
Although Kool-Aid also works.) :)

A waste indeed hence the IPA.
It would have been my wife’s vodka. I drink whisky which leaves a stain
when it dries. Now, your witches brew could be used as a nutrient. ;-)

When I was a child, we got a shiny new Acorn A3010 for Christmas. My
sister spilt Ribena around the Delete key area, so even many years later
that key always got stuck down if you pressed it. I got into such a
habit of never using that key (as it would end up deleting everything
after the cursor before you could wiggle it back up), that even today it
feels dangerous to use it.

German caps lock should be called shift lock.

As a matter of fact it is called Feststelltaste (loosely translating to
lock key), and typically labelled ⇩ (loosely translating to downward
arrow) :P

As for its function, that depends on the keyboard driver you're using.
On Windows for instance, the "Deutsch (Standard)" keyboard driver
follows the German official norm, which continues the tradition of
mechanical typewriters to have the key operate as shift lock, but German
keyboard drivers do exist that configure it as caps lock, such as the
"Deutsch (IBM)" keyboard driver on Windows.

Obviously the "Deutsch (Standard)" use of the key is the more
straightforward: Locked state matches the shifted state, and that's
that. On the other end of the spectrum, the "Deutsch (Schweiz)" not only
restricts the function of the key to the letter keys, but goes so far as
to make some keys yield results that differ from both the shifted and
unshifted sate.

If only I'd known it was as simple as changing my keyboard driver to IBM...

Ah! We here have a little difficulty I overlooked. I read "sate"
(Indonesian and popular in NL) as the pieces of pork pricked on a stick
and generally served with peanut sauce. However, I like your reading of
the word :-)

That don't impress me much; what I'm after is a few more dedicated macro
keys.

The purpose of the illumination is, in descending order of importance,

(1) to show off
(2) to see the keys even in almost total darkness
(3) to show off
(4) to remember what mode or profile you've currently set the
programmable keys to
(5) to show off
(6) to remember what type of stuff which key does in the game you're
currently playing
(7) to show off
(8) to remember what combo keys go with a particular key you've just pressed
(9) to show off

For the purpose of (1), (3), (5), (7) and (9) you can set the keyboard
to show all kinds of fancy animations.

For the purpose of (2), you can set the entire keyboard to show a
uniform colour with adjustable brightness. For the purpose of (4), you
can specify the colour on a per-profile or per-mode basis, e.g. for a
roleplay game you might want to use green to indicate that the macro
keys are currently set up for playing as a healer, yellow for a ranged
weapons fighter, red for a melee weapons fighter, and blue for a mage.

For the purpose of (6), you can specify the colour on a per-key basis,
e.g. you might assign blue to movement keys, yellow to keys for
switching weapons, red for attacking, and for non-combat stuff.

For the purpose of (8), the newest generation of keyboards also allow
you to further specify the colour based on what keys you're currently
pressing, or have just pressed a few moments ago.

My no-longer-trusty old G19 catered to (1)-(5).

The Corsair k95 RGB keyboard I expect to be delivered tomorrow will
cater to (1)-(9) and presumably (11) and (13), but the main reason I'm
getting it is the whopping 18 dedicated macro keys. I'm also looking
forward to the ability to re-program not only those dedicated macro
keys, but each and every key I feel like messing with.
Like, say, reprogramming the decimals separator on the numeric keypad to
either "." or "," to match the application I'm currently working with.

Getting fancy illumination with this is ok.

I see that my life is slowly drifting away from the mainstream. I shall

If you can give purpose to the lights, then OK of course.

A metal casing top is also an interesting feature...

This baby needs some modding though: The light bleeding out from under
the key caps /is/ counter-productive for all purposes except showing off.
